FT-86 concept design rejected?

from 7tune.com:

Quote:
In the aftermath of last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota’s North American design studio CALTY has survived the selection process to have its version of the FT-86 accepted as the basis of the new model instead of European and Japanese efforts.

Toyota Europe Design Development (ED²) was responsible for the design of the FT-86 Concept which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show last October and was relatively well received by the public. We now know that the ED² design was rejected as early as November last year, leaving the CALTY and Toyota Technical Center’s designs to go head to head. By year’s end the Toyota Technical Center’s effort was also rejected in favor of the CALTY design. At this point the basic design of the FT-86 is ready with only minor changes yet to be decided and Toyota management will make a final decision on these sometime in March. As for the new design, apparently much of the original CALTY version will remain which makes less use of curved surfaces but gives the FT-86 a higher profile around the nose section with increased overhang, although basic dimensions like wheelbase, height and width remain unchanged. CALTY was responsible for the FT-HS concept so it’s possible some subtle styling cues from that design will have an impact on the revised FT-86 shape.

As far as the Subaru 216A is concerned, apparently both it and the Toyota FT-86 will differ only with badges and equipment levels despite earlier rumors of the two models differing considerably. The engine and drivetrain will remain unchanged from the D-4S direct injected EJ20 flat four for the naturally aspirated models, however the turbocharged G’s version will get a stronger differential and 6-speed transmission assuming it makes production.

this looks really close to some "MR2" drawings spread a while ago at Auto Express when they were talking about hybrid small sports car (possibly MR2) back in March, 2009

here are pics:

this reminds of some honda CR-z or 7th gen celica :/

the european design version we`ve seen, maybe this is the japanese design version that was also rejected :/

here`s another pic from Motor Trends

of course, maybe its just a rumor that 7tune has spread LOL :D

The red car really looks like the 7tune rendering, just a bit spiced up, but the whole car geometry is the same, wheel position the same. If we can call it a property of 7tune, because the watermark doesnt say anything.

Oh, and the white "mr2" rear is just fugly :/

At the end of last year (when FT-86 concept was already revealed at Tokyo Motor Show 2009) these design sketches of possible "MR-S (MR2) Hybrid" were featured in BestCar Magazine of Japan:

You know that a design was "right" when it stopped my girl friend in her tracks as she walked past my monitor... that was the FT-86. I really hope that Toyota has made the correct decision, but what are the chances of two great small platform rear wheel drive designs existing at the same time?

some Dutch sites report that Toyota FT-86 (in new design?) would debut in Geneva 2010 auto show in March..

It`s good that Calty made the FT-HS design, but if we compare FT-HS vs FT-86, the FT86 is a clear winner to me. the FT-HS edges are too sharp..

the FT-HS concept design is really too sharp and cosmic, just like 7gen Celica they (CALTY) designed. The canned ED2 FT-86 design is far too superior :(

It seems the FT-86 concept was really a CONCEPT and far from production model. This is translated from japanese, comments from Senior Global Design Management Department and Design Division, Mr. Matsuoka Tomohito:

Quote:

AE-86 body shape of the rear gate with three types of doors and two doors were two types of 3BOX types.

This concept with three gates in the rear door.

"3BOX is not clear is due to the emphasis on aerodynamics," Senior Global Design Management Department and Design Division, Mr. Matsuoka Tomohito the mean.

"We are still in concept stage, including the silhouette for each form and color to consider."

Terms of market, "or in the year after being released and said the newspaper, still (body styles) are likely to change much. This form is tried for the Tokyo Motor Show this" he said.

Its design, "and the too-common design, not design for design, also Fender, for example, we have to design a simple combination of three-dimensional needed. Beautility minimal, we have a well-muscled expression I ta "he said.
